Congratulations to Scholar Jonathan Sargent!

Jonathan Sargent, recipient of the Larry Drummond Scholarship, was selected as a member of the 2017 National Coca-Cola Community College Silver Academic Team and the 2017 All-Alabama Community College Academic Team.

Both awards are a result of Jonathan’s outstanding academic and leadership activities while at Bevill State-Walker College Campus. He represented Bevill State at a ceremony in April in Montgomery and will receive scholarships from Coca-Cola and All-Alabama for his success.

Jonathan’s activities at Bevill State include serving as a Walker College Foundation scholar and mentor, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) officer, National Student Leadership Society member, Scholars Bowl participant, and a member of the Interclub Council. He attended the PTK national convention in Nashville in April. He volunteered as a math tutor for fellow students and has participated in many community service activities including Rotary Club of Jasper’s Trivia Night fundraiser, Toys for Tots holiday toy drive and Capstone Rural Health Center’s holiday toy drive. He also serves with the AHMEN Honduras mission team.

Jonathan was also selected to receive Bevill State’s University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Transfer Scholarship. He plans to study electrical engineering with a focus on renewable energy. His future plans include focusing on developing renewable energy sources for third world countries.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation chooses 50 gold, 50 silver and 50 bronze scholars each year based on academic strength, leadership, and service activities of each nominee. Silver scholarship recipients receive $1,250 and an honorary medallion. The Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team is sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

The All-Alabama Academic Team is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges. Students selected for this team are chosen based on academic strength, leadership, and service activities. These students also receive a scholarship for their transfer college.
